Our Steinway showroom was opened in 2020 as a response to the demand for high quality restored grand pianos competitively price in relation to new instruments. We believe that an older piano can sound and feel as good, if not better, than a new one. This is primarily because the quality of the well-seasoned wood used in the past for the soundboard, exterior frame and other parts can be superior to modern kiln-dried wood, giving greater resonance and richness of sonority.

We typically send our Steinways to Europe’s largest piano restorers in the first instance as we don’t have a spray booth or the equipment to repolish large pianos in black polyester (i.e. as new Steinways are). They re-gild the frames beautifully and re-chrome the bolts and duplexes. Once the carcass of the piano is returned we restring it using the finest copper-wound strings made by the Deben Wire Co in the UK for the bass strings and German Roslau wire for the steel strings. We restore and regulate the actions in our workshop using genuine Steinway parts where necessary and high quality felt, leather and other materials, usually supplied by Louis Renner & Co. – the company owned by Steinway.

We take great care with every aspect of the restoration process, ensuring accurate regulation of the action which is essential for achieving an even, responsive touch. This is followed by our voicing of the hammers once the tuning of the new strings has stabilised. Every piano has its own personality and we believe that those of our restored Steinway grands are as fine and engaging as any new piano. Why not come and try them for yourself!
