Steinway and Sons is preeminent among piano brands for good reason: they have made some of the best pianos in the world for over a century. This Vertegrand (meaning literally ‘upright-grand') is a stylish instrument that was built with the finest materials available. The quality of the wood in this pre-WW! era, especially that used for the soundboard, and the workmanship involved in using it to make this superb piano, is extraordinary. It has a wonderfully rich and deep tone which projects well at all dynamic levels and a long sustain. Many experts regard this model - now known as the 'Model K; - as being the finest upright piano ever made. This example has been restored at some point in the past and this probably included replacement wrest pins. The tuning is certainly very stable and will remain so for for many decades to come. As well as regulating the action, voicing the hammers and tuning the piano to concert pitch, we have French polished the handsome 'ebonized' case. It still has its original ivory keyboard (duly registered in accordance with the Ivory Act), which is in immaculate condition. A new Model K costs over £50,000 so at well under a third of the price of a new one this represents excellent value. It is a truly stunning piano by the finest maker that has to be played to be fully appreciated!
